A Drug-Free Campus Where Everyone Feels Safe
Treat student drug use as the concern parents name first. Detect smoking and vaping in restrooms, and enforce zero tolerance for harassment.
Parents tell me drug use is the pain that sits above the others. A school cannot ask families for trust if students are vaping or using drugs in the restroom. I will push for a drug-free campus, including smoke and vape detection in bathrooms that alerts staff, without putting cameras inside the restroom.
The problem is not confined to one district. In 2024 the CDC reported that 7.8% of U.S. high school students currently used e-cigarettes. A 2019 national survey found that a bathroom or locker room was the most common place students noticed someone vaping. Detection is how a campus stops looking the other way. When a student is caught, the response should include help, and it should also have consequences.
Safety is broader than substances. Students and staff should feel safe and secure at school. Harassment of any kind—bullying, sexual harassment, threats—gets zero tolerance: it is reported, it is stopped, and it is not minimized.
What I'll push for
- Make a drug-free campus an explicit district expectation
- Install smoke and vape detection in restrooms, with alerts to staff and no cameras inside bathrooms
- Pair detection with support and with clear consequences
- Enforce zero tolerance for harassment of students or staff: reported, stopped, and never minimized
